Kum Zhen Kit is a Malaysian litigation lawyer with five years of experience in legal practice. He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Malaya in 2020 and was admitted and called to the Malaysian Bar on 17 September 2021.
His practice encompasses civil and commercial litigation, with particular experience in motor vehicle accident litigation and insurance-related disputes, as well as corporate and shareholder disputes, contractual and commercial disputes, debt recovery, property-related disputes, winding-up proceedings and other contentious matters.
Kum commenced his legal career with Messrs Arifin & Partners as a pupil under the tutelage of Mr Steven Wong Chin Fung. During his pupillage, he was exposed to a broad range of legal matters, including general civil litigation, banking litigation and corporate work, providing him with a solid foundation in contentious and commercial practice.
Upon his admission to the Malaysian Bar, Kum joined Messrs Ong Kok Bin in 2022, where he was principally involved in corporate litigation and probate matters.
Later in 2022, Kum joined Messrs Zaid Ibrahim Suflan TH Liew & Partners, where he was primarily responsible for motor vehicle accident litigation files. He acted for and advised insurance companies and their insureds in relation to claims arising from motor vehicle accidents, including matters involving disputed liability, personal injury, fatal accident, dependency and damages claims.
His responsibilities included advising insurers and insureds on potential liability and exposure arising from motor vehicle accidents, assessing the merits and quantum of claims, evaluating the prospects of defending or resolving claims, and advising on appropriate litigation and settlement strategies.
Kum handled motor accident claims through various stages of litigation, including the preparation of pleadings and affidavits, interlocutory applications, written submissions, trial preparation and conduct, examination and cross-examination of witnesses, settlement negotiations and appellate proceedings. He appeared before the Magistrates’ Courts, Sessions Courts and High Court in various parts of Peninsular Malaysia, including the southern region and Pahang.
From August 2024, Kum served as a Non-Equity Partner (Salaried) at Messrs Zaid Ibrahim Suflan TH Liew & Partners, where he continued to conduct contentious matters and was responsible for the management and conduct of litigation files.
Kum is currently a Senior Legal Associate at Messrs Tiong & Woon, where he continues to practise in civil and commercial litigation. His current practice encompasses corporate and shareholder disputes, contractual and commercial disputes, property and land disputes, debt recovery, winding-up and insolvency-related proceedings, insurance litigation and other civil claims.
He has acted for a diverse range of clients, including individuals, companies, shareholders, insurers and insured persons. His experience includes matters involving disputed liability and quantum, contractual obligations, shareholder rights, corporate disputes, recovery of debts and claims for damages.
Kum adopts a structured, analytical and commercially conscious approach to litigation, with emphasis on identifying the material factual, legal and evidential issues in each matter and developing a strategy aligned with the client’s objectives. He places importance on thorough preparation, clear advocacy and practical advice, while recognising that negotiation and settlement may, where appropriate, provide an effective means of resolving a dispute.
